2012 Econorun an Enjoyable Skagit County Success

The EconoRun course on Saturday provided a scenic drive around Fidalgo Island, down Anacortes main road and on to the beautiful Skagit Valley farms and back-roads and returned to La Conner.

Gassing Up

The Chevron fuel station of the Swinomish Tribes across the channel provided us with first class facilities to take care of the entrants at the beginning and again when they returned to get refilled and recorded. They were great partners in making sure that part of the event ran smoothly.

After the run, folks spent the afternoon checking out the attractions of the area.

Banquet

The Saturday evening Banquet at La Conner Seafood & Prime Rib was an event to be remembered. The room provided a great view of the Channel and was perfectly sized. We all enjoyed another round of Ron Backman's "Corvair Jeopardy" with Axle Trebeck (Mike Klaus) as the MC and Miss Monza (Lauren Burton) as the lovely assistant. Seriously challenging questions put everyone on the edge of their seat while working their memory banks for just the right question to Axle's answers.

The buffet style meal was delicious with both prime rib and chicken Parmesan available. A choice of desert was a welcome addition. The banquet room was on the second story above the Swinomish Channel and provided a great atmosphere and a glorious view.

The awards ceremony was warmly received by the crowd of Corvair enthusiasts that had come from Oregon, Washington and Canada. The famous "art award" gas can was graciously passed on to Corsa Oregon for their outstanding participation at the event this year. They were nearly speechless (well we can't print it, anyway) in trying to proclaim their emotions while receiving the lovingly decorated gas can (again) Fred Croydon announced that Corvairs Northwest would be the host club for the 2013 EconoRun event. So get ready to have another great time in the Puget Sound area.

Accomodations

The Channel Lodge & Country Inn Host Hotels were very comfortable and inviting. They provided a large Hospitality Suite that made the registration and social gathering an easy pleasant experience. The quality of the lodging was first class all the way and the morning breakfast and coffee spread was outstanding! Enjoy the additional articles about more of the weekend events.

Ice cream social at Steve Hammatt's Classic Car Garage in Mt. Vernon

Econorun entrants were invited to attend a tour of Steve's fine collection of automotive history. He greeted everyone with a smile and offered your choice of Ice Cream flavors and cookies along with an offer to check out the contents of his dream garage.

1914 Overland (left), 1914 Cadillac (right). Duane Dolan was happy to see things older than he is still in great shape! Duane, whose 90th birthday is fast approaching, is a WWII Navy veteran.

Steve is a big fan of early automotive history and has collected several interesting specimens. Two of them are vintage 1914 - one is a Cadillac Roadster with a "rumble" seat. He also owns a fabulous Overland/Willys touring sedan. Both are up to the task of historic tours, which Steve and Phyllis participate in. Steve took the Overland on a tour of back roads in the southern Sierra foothills out of Bakersfield not too long ago. Drove it thru some snow!

He's also got more modern machinery in the garage, namely a 1932 LaSalle sedan that shows the remarkable progress of the motorcar over the intervening 18 years. It's quite an art deco design masterpiece and a lovely car.

Bob Hansen (age 86) has this 1932 Cadillac La Salle beat by several years
